Spanish football has been embroiled in a recent refereeing controversy. Munuera Montero, who refereed last Saturday's Osasuna-Real Madrid match, is being investigated for a possible conflict of interest with a company of which he is a member. However, the referee himself defended himself and denied everything he had been accused of.
At the same time, La Liga president Javier Tebas spoke about what was going on during the presentation of a documentary about Leganés: “There have always been complaints about referees. It is not something that is happening now. What happens is that there is a club that makes much more noise than before and it seems that everything happens”.
“The reflection that needs to be made, which we already did at the time, is that Spanish refereeing is truly improvable,” he added.
Tebas himself bets on a change in refereeing: “A rebuild or change is needed in terms of refereeing structure and other things”.
Although he continued to defend the fairness of the competition: “Now let's hope that it comes and is fulfilled. I am more concerned that they want to build a story that there is an adulterated competition, which is the one that Real Madrid maintains. And that is not true. They are constructing this story to damage the competition”.
