Kompany fumes at officiating after thriller: "I need to understand why that's a penalty"
Bayern Munchen ultimately came out on the wrong side of a pulsating encounter at PSG, a match defined by its relentless drama. Speaking to 'Movistar' shortly after the final whistle, Vincent Kompany reflected on his side's display and the officiating calls that shaped the contest.
"It was an extraordinary game, but I have just reviewed the penalty incident: the ball strikes the leg first before hitting the arm. I need to understand the reasoning behind that decision. I also cannot comprehend why the referee awarded that corner when our defender didn't even touch the ball—especially as they scored immediately from it," fumed a visibly frustrated Vincent Kompany.
Despite his grievances, the manager acknowledged the quality of the spectacle. "It was a superb night for football, with immense talent and technical quality on display from both sides," he noted.
Returning to the game's turning points, Kompany doubled down on his indignation: "I am still trying to process if the penalty was awarded for that reason. If that was the criteria, it was undoubtedly the defining moment of the match," he lamented.
Looking ahead to the return leg, Kompany remained defiant despite the narrow deficit. "Ordinarily, if you concede five goals in an away semifinal, you are out. However, we scored four and could have scored even more. We were a constant threat, never stopped searching for goals, and pressed PSG with real intensity," he concluded.
