Kane, three goals away from overtaking Rooney as England's top scorer

Just two goals separate Kane (51) and Rooney (53), who holds the record as England's top scorer since surpassing Bobby Charlton's 49 goals in a Euro 2016 match against Switzerland in September 2015.

Rooney's last goal came on a painful day for England when the United striker made it 1-2 against Iceland in the round of 16. This defeat was also Rooney's last goal as an internartional player and he left his tally at 53.

Kane needs just two goals to match Rooney and three to overtake him. The Tottenham Hotspur player, who is now in his late 30s, was asked to score more goals in the big moments.

He did not score a goal at Euro 2016, but in Russia he scored a brace in the opener against Tunisia, a hat trick against Panama and a goal against Colombia in the round of 16. He was longing to not score in the quarter-finals, semi-finals or in the fight for third and fourth place.

His next destination was Euro 2020 (held in 2021), where he was criticised for not scoring a single goal in the group stage. However, he netted a goal against Germany in the round of 16, two against Ukraine in the quarter-finals and one in the semi-final against Denmark. He also scored his penalty against Italy in the final, but the trophy went to Rome.

Since then, the striker has added 13 goals to his England tally, ten of which have come in World Cup qualifying, one in friendlies and two in the disastrous Nations League, in which England have been relegated.

Kane, who has yet to win a single title with Tottenham, knows that international football is the best opportunity to reach his goal.
