Gordon shrugs off Liverpool's interest after rejected £80m bid

The Newcastle winger, who has been in outstanding form since joining from Everton, admitted in an interview that he had no ties to Everton before they took him in. "So I was at Liverpool and they released me when I was 11, and then Everton signed me," he explained.

Despite his rise in the Premier League, Gordon joked that his Liverpool-supporting family were not exactly backing him whenever he faced the Reds. "As long as we lost they were alright. If I scored, they were like 'great, but we want you to lose'. My family are bitter Liverpool fans," he said.

Liverpool had considered a move for the England international, whose pace and attacking ability would fit their style, but Newcastle rejected their approach. The Magpies instead managed to balance their finances by selling other players, allowing them to keep hold of Gordon, who scored against Liverpool in a thrilling 3-3 draw earlier this season.

Discussing his future, the 23-year-old dismissed speculation that he needs to leave Newcastle to play at the highest level. "Because the club has transitioned so quickly, other fans and other media outlets just pick the players… when we play well, it’s like 'He's got to move from Newcastle,' but that’s not the reality," he said.

Gordon also rejected the idea that Newcastle’s rise is just part of a long-term project: "We're trying to win now, we're trying to win cups now, we’re trying to get back into the Champions League, and if we do that then it’ll no longer be called a project, will it?"
