Toni Kroos announced at the press conference before the Champions League match against Leipzig that he still did not know whether or not he would return to the national team for Euro 2024. His return might seem like a good thing from outside the country, but in Germany the midfielder's possible return to the national team is dividing opinion.
According to journalist Benjamin Post of the local 'Leipziger Volkszeitung', 50 percent of Germans want him to return and the other half are against. But he is clear: "In my opinion, it would be a good thing if he returned. The debate has intensified after Rudiger said he was trying to convince Kroos to return from international retirement.
"There are people in Germany who think that Kroos is no longer a top world player. That he stopped being one after the 2014 World Cup," says the German reporter as the main reason for those opposed to his return.
Toni Kroos is having an exceptional season with Real Madrid and has earned enough merit to return to his country's national team if he so desires. In addition, Germany would do well to have a player of the characteristics of Real Madrid's No. 8. But, in the eyes of his own countrymen, there is a controversy that nobody understands outside their borders.
