German Burgos, better known as 'Mono' Burgos, will no longer be Diego Simeone's assistant coach at the end of the season. The Argentine confirmed the news in a video published by Atletico Madrid.
"At the end of the 2019-20 season, I will begin my coaching career. I think after more than ten years experience in La Liga as an assistant coach, I'm more than capable of taking charge of a team," Burgos said.
Even Simeone and his coaching staff recently extended their contracts until 2022, Burgos did not do that. He said in the video that he told the club's board of his decision.
"We held a meeting in which I told them of my plans and they all saw it as normal. It's a normal step for an assistant coach that he wants to become a coach himself. Simeone is a friend. We knew each other for many years and we understand each other's gestures. I've had lunch more times with Simeone than with my family," he commented.
It was an open secret, but the coach has now confirmed the news. That said, he will not leave without first trying to win another trophy at Atletico.
"Until my last minute here, I will try and achieve all of my objectives, that is the main thing. I want to leave Atletico Madrid being a champion. Let that be clear to everyone," he continued.
Finally, the former keeper explained: "The fact I have coached world champions is something I take away with me because not everyone has that opportunity,. But at Atletico Madrid there were seven of therm. This is a probably just a goodbye for now. Keep on fighting and put your heart into it."
