French league votes to reduce relegation

The French league president, Frederic Thiriez, confirmed that there had been a majority vote in favour of sticking by an initial decision taken in May to relegate two clubs from the 20-team Ligue 1 instead of the usual three, with only two clubs coming up from Ligue 2.

The move was made despite an open letter written last month by the president of second-tier , signed by 23 of his counterparts, demanding an extraordinary general meeting to call for the the reform to be annulled.
