Former Messi teammate Mascherano set to become Inter Miami manager

Javier Mascherano is set to become Inter Miami's newest boss, according to the latest report from Cesar Luis Merlo. The 40-year-old, currently in charge of Argentina's under-20s side, will reportedly be relieved from his international role to coach former Barcelona teammate Messi in the MLS.

Reports linking the former defender to Miami first emerged on Wednesday, as 'Miami Herald' claimed that the club's choice was between him and Xavi. The American side have now seemingly opted for the less experienced individual from the pair, as Xavi continues to remain without a club following a bitter end to his journey as Barcelona manager last summer.

According to Merlo's report, an agreement has already been reached between Mascherano and the club, albeit documents are yet to be signed. This means that he is one step closer to reuniting with his former Barca teammates Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquests in Florida, but as manager.

Mascherano is therefore set to replace compatriot Tata Martino, who has confirmed his exit during a press conference on Friday alongisde team co-owner Jorge Mas and president of football operations Raul Sanllehi. Martino exaplained that he departed the club to "personal reasons".
