End of an era at Bayern

The upcoming 1st June will mark the six year anniversary of Bayern Munich's 2013 DFB Pokal final triumph - a win that marked a historic treble for the Germans following victories in the Champions League and Bundesliga earlier that year. The end of that season saw the legendary Jupp Heynckes depart, although he did briefly return as caretaker boss in 2017, and his tenure would then give way to Pep Guardiola's Bayern era - a time in which the Champions League became something of a taboo subject at the club.

After this season finishes, only 5 players from that dominant team that won the Champions League at Wembley will remain at Bayern: Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martínez, Thomas Müller and David Alaba. Only the last two, at 29 and 26 years of age respectively, are now under 30.

On that magical and dramatic night of the 25th May for Bayern Munich, their lineup consisted of: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Javi Martínez, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Müller and Mandzukic. Luiz Gustavo and Mario Gomez also entered off the bench.

With the Champions League final against German rivals Borussia Dortmund delicately poised at 1-1 in the 89th minute, Arjen Robben stepped up and scored the most important goal of his career to take the European Cup back to Munich. The other goal for Munich that night was scored by Mario Mandzukic, who has since featured at Atlético Madrid and Juventus.

Without a doubt, the two departures that will be hardest to swallow this year for the Bayern fans are those of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. The Frenchman will say goodbye after 12 seasons and 423 games, whilst the Dutch winger will bid farewell having spent 10 years at the club, playing 307 times for the perennial Bundesliga champions. These goodbye could be almost as tough as the emotional departures of Bastian Schweinsteiger in 2015 and Phillip Lahm in 2017.

Another long-time servant will be departing this summer, with Rafinha, who also featured in that treble winning season, set to leave the club after 8 seasons and 266 appearances. With rumours casting doubts over the futures of Javi Martínez and Jerome Boateng, it's fair to say that very little remains of Bayern's 2013 superteam.
