Petr Cech announced his retirement at the end of the 2018-19 season and started working in the management of Chelsea, where he was a player from 2004 to 2015. But now, in the middle of 2020, he could pick his gloves back up to play with the team.
This is no joke. Several weeks ago, Chelsea surprised everyone by including Cech among those registered for the Premier League along with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Edouard Mendy and Willy Caballero. They did it to cover their back, you never know what could happen.
So the goalkeeper is keeping fit and working to be available if ever needed. He acknowledged this in an interview for 'Téléfoot' where he explained his situation at Chelsea.
"I know that I am 100% ready to help if necessary. I'm fit, and with the two months of training I've seen that I have the same quality. Besides, I rested a year without playing football. It really gave me energy, my body recovered after playing 20 years as a professional," he said.
For newcomer Mendy, it's a luxury to have Cech with them: "It's an absolute pleasure to be with him every day. Working with Petr in training allows me to see how he works and analyse his game. So it's a big advantage for me to be here".
In short, Cech says that "if circumstances put him on the pitch", he will be ready to play for the first time since 29 May 2019, when he played his last game as a professional. It was precisely in a Chelsea-Arsenal match that he finished 4-1 for his former and now new team.
