"Can they only intervene when it suits them?" - Furious Conte criticises VAR

Napoli manager Antonio Conte lashed out, after the draw against Inter (1-1), harshly against the VAR for not intervening in the penalty given to the 'Nerazzurri', missed by Turkish Hakan Calhanoglu. “What does it mean that the VAR cannot intervene in this type of case?” an angry Conte told ‘DAZN’ after the duel.

“Now, sometimes it can intervene and sometimes not. When it suits him, he does. A referee's decision can change a match. The VAR is either there to correct or not because, if not, it hides behind the possibility of not intervening. If there is an error, it must intervene, period and end. No ifs or buts,” he added. The Serie A leader continued his long speech against the misuse of the VAR in this action.

“It makes me very angry, as it does the rest of the coaches. If there are mistakes, he has to intervene. He has to be used to correct mistakes or make us see situations that have not been seen. The penalty is a glaring mistake that can influence the match. If there is a mistake, he has to call it. Then the referee will decide, but he has to go and see,” he said.

“The VAR doesn't make me feel as confident as it used to,” he sentenced. In Italy, the possibility of including the so-called 'VAR to coach's call' is being studied, something that does not convince Conte either. “VAR to coach's call? What does that mean? The VAR has to be called by them, why should it be me? VAR is a great tool if it's used well. If the referee fails, you call him because, if not, it makes him look ridiculous,” he commented.
