Basler: Schweinsteiger and Podolski are too old for Euro 2016

According to former Germany international Mario Basler, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lucas Podolski should not be considered for Euro 2016 because of their age.

Schweinsteiger is currently sidelined with injury and is not expected to feature for Manchester United again this season meanng that his place in the German squad is far from safe.

The United man is the Germany captain and is a favourite of Joachim Low, however, Basler has claimed that taking the 31-year-old in the summer would be a huge risk. 

"I wouldn't take Bastian Schweinsteiger. He's not 25 or 28 years old any more," he said to the Rheinischen Post.

"He's had several injuries throughout the season. There's a risk that he will be injured again."

Former Arsenal forward Lucas Podolski is also in contention for a spot in the team, but Basler believes Low should choose younger and 'better' players.

I think we have younger and better players in attacking positions [than Podolski]. 

"If Julian Draxler gets the green light from the doctors, for instance, it will be difficult for Lukas to go to France."
