Ghana striker Andre Ayew has lived an unhappy World Cup in Qatar: he lost his godson on the day they played Portugal and had to leave the pitch at half-time of the match against Uruguay because his daughter fainted in the stands after he missed a penalty.
The Al-Sadd player confirmed both events on his social media on Saturday and said he had experienced "very difficult moments".
"I am very, very proud of all my teammates for putting up a wonderful team spirit on and off the pitch, for our country Ghana.
"Personally, it has been very difficult moments for me in the past few days. I lost my godson the morning before the Portugal game, and my daughter was also rushed to the hospital after the Uruguay. Thanks to the Almighty Allah, she’s getting better," he said.
Ayew, who missed a penalty in the first half of the match, was substituted after the break. Ghana were eliminated from the first round of the World Cup as bottom of Group H, having lost to Portugal, beaten South Korea and lost in the final match to Uruguay.
"Our final group match result was not what we were looking forward to in the tournament, but unfortunately it ended up this way...," Ayew said.
