Average age of goalscorers in top five leagues

The age of a goal in La Liga is the oldest among the top five leagues. Veteran stars have continued to steal headlines with their goalscoring abilities, giving the Spanish top flight (29.4) the highest average age for its top ten goalscorers, followed by the Premier League in second (27.0), Serie A in third (26.5), Bundesliga in fourth (25.7) and Ligue 1 in fifth (24.5).
Having netted 22 times so far this season for Hansi Flick's Barcelona, 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski is currently the 'Pichichi' in the Primera Division. He is one of four players in the top ten places who have already entered their 30s, alongside Ante Budimir (33), Ayoze Perez (31) and Kike Garcia (35).
Thanks to his transfer from Bayern Munich, the Polish striker has continued Spain's trend of having household names up front after the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema. Lewandowski is having his best La Liga season yet after equalling his best scoring campaign from his first year at Catalunya.
The situation in England is perhaps more balanced than that in Spain. With a bang-on average age of 27, the Premier League's figure can be explained by its ability to attract rising superstars both financially and competitively. The arrivals of younger faces like Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak have served to lower this figure.
That said, older players like Salah, 32 and Wood, 33, are also shining in the English top flight. The Egyptian has never ceased to score since landing at Anfield from Roma, even more so this term as he leads the ranking with 27 goals. Meanwhile, the New Zealand striker has led Nottingham Forest to an almost certain European spot thanks to his 18 goals.
Mohamed Salah and Chris Wood are the only Premier League players above 30 on a top ten goalscorers list that also includes 24-year-old Haaland (21), 25-year-old Isak (19), 25-year-old Mbuemo (15), 28-year-old Wissa (14), 22-year-old Palmer, (14), 25-year-old Cunha (13), 29-year-old Watkins (13) and 27-year-old Mateta (12).
Similar to La Liga, Serie A was also known for having veteran goalscorers. Players like Di Natale, Quagliarella, or recently Immobile, who won the Golden Boot at age 30, had been topping the scoring charts in Italy until not long ago, but the situation has now evolved. The average age of a goal has now gone down to 26.5.
Atalanta's Mateo Retegui is the current 'Capocannoniere' with 22 goals to his name. The Argentina-born striker holds a whopping 7-goal gap on his closest challenger, Moise Kean (15). Oddly enough, Romelu Lukaku, who is down in 7th in the standings with ten goals, is the only player older than 30 among Serie A's top ten goalscorers.
The French and German top flights are all about youth when it comes to goals, with an average age of 24.5 and 25.7, respectively. As was the case in Italy, the Bundesliga also has a single player in his 30s in its first ten goalscoring spots: Harry Kane. Yet, he is also the leader. After bagging 36 goals in his first season in Germany, the 31-year-old is on course to smash the 'Torkannone' race for a second consecutive time.
The Bayern Munich striker has netted 21 times already this season, finding himself 4 ahead of Leverkusen's Shick, 29, in second. Other young stars like 21-year-old Benjamin Sekso (10) and 22-year-old duo Jamal Musiala (11) and Hugo Ekitike (13) have also been flourishing with their goals, representing a bright future for German football.
In France, Alexandre Lacazette, 33, and Ludovic Ajorque, 31, are the anomalies among a relatively young lineup of goal scorers, each scoring 10 goals, while Ousmane Dembele is at the summit of the list. The PSG forward has netted 21 goals this term and is continuing with his stellar start to the calendar year.
Marseille's Mason Greenwood (23) and Lille's Jonathan David (25) make up the podium places, finding themselves 6 and 7 goals away from Dembele's tally, respectively. The remaining positions among the top ten in Ligue 1 are occupied by Bradley Barcola (22), Mika Biereth (22), Emanuel Emegha (22), Arnaud Kalimuendo (23) and Evann Guessand (23).
