Discussions of contract extensions are ongoing between the two midfielders and the club, with a resolution thought to be close.

According to 'Sky Sports News' Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are close to agreeing new deals with Manchester United.

29 year old Herrera has been linked to a return to former club Athletic Bilbao this summer, but the Spaniard was very clear in vocalising his desire to stay at Old Trafford in the early weeks of the current campaign.

However in spite of the payers wishes, the club could decide to move him on, as he has only made 2 league starts so far this season, seemingly now out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, fellow spaniard Juan Mata had a one year contract extension triggered back in January, and given his standout performances for the 'Red Devils' in recent weeks (against Newcastle and Juventus to name but a few), it seems like he has played his way to a new deal.

30 year old Mata has only started 5 of United's Premier League games so far this campaign, but has also made numerous successful substitute appearances for the Old Trafford side.

Both players' contracts are due to expire at the end of the current season, with teammates  Anthony Martial and David de Gea also into the final year of their respective deals.

It was also reported earlier this week that United have made moves to secure Ashley Young to a one year extension, as the left back is also in the final year of his deal, with talks making good progress.
