The Dutch giants boast one of the top academies in world football, with real talents rising through the ranks. Ajax have made a name for themselves as a selling club, by getting a good price for their players who go on to star in the top European leagues. If they had managed to hold on to those promising stars, Ajax would be globally feared nowadays.

Goalkeeper: Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona)

The Dutch international played in goal for Ajax 143 times. His good passing and distribution made him the ideal candidate to be Ter Stegen's understudy at Barcelona.

Right-back: Gregory van der Wiel (Cagliari)

Now heading into the twilight of his career, the former PSG man who was also targeted by Real Madrid, began his career at Ajax before joining the French giants for 9 million euros.

Centre-back: Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham)

The Belgian is one of the stars of the Premier League after a disappointing spell at Atletico Madrid. Before that, he had been snapped up by Ajax.

Centre-back: Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham)

Another Spurs defender, the pair also play together in the national team and left the Dutch capital in 2012 before being reunited in north London.

Left-back: Daley Blind (Manchester United)

Just like his father Danny Blind, he grew up in the Ajax academy, before joining Manchester United in 2014.

Midfielder: Nigel de Jong (Galatasaray)

The tough defender left Amserdam to play for the likes of City and Milan. He is currently an outcast at Turkish side Galatasaray.

Midfielder: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham)

The technically gifted Danish international put on some glowing performances for Ajax before Spurs swooped in to secure his talents.

Midfielder: Davy Klaassen (Everton)

He swapped Amsterdam for Liverpool this summer in exchange for 27 million to embark upon an adventure in English football.

Midfielder: Wesley Sneijder (Nice)

The talented midfielder joined Real Madrid from Ajax in 2007. An unremarkable spell in the Spanish capital was followed by a triumphant period at Inter. He is now in the Ligue 1 after a couple of years at Galatasaray.

Striker: Luis Suarez (Barcelona)

After shining at Groningen, the Uruguayan striker landed at Ajax. The rest is history. Liverpool and Barcelona have enjoyed his clinical goalscoring.

Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United)

In 2001, the Swede arrived from Malmoe. It was his first top-tier experience in football and his career unfolded favourably from there. Inter, Barcelona, PSG, Manchester United...

Bench: Stekelenburg, Huntelaar, Van der Vaart, Babel, Bojan...

So many big names have played for Ajax, it is impossible to list them all. Some (Huntelaar) returned, while others never found success away from the Amsterdam Arena: Ryan Babel, Bojan Krkic, Thomas Vermaelen...
