With the league phase of the new Champions League format now concluded, the top 8 teams have directly qualified for the round of 16, 16 teams have earned a spot in the playoffs while 12 teams have been eliminated from the tournament.

The first-ever league phase of the new Champions League format has concluded after eight thrilling matchdays - the last raising the tension with 18 matches kicking off on the same day and at the same time.

Of the 36 teams in the tournament, only 24 have made it through to the knockout stages. The top eight have earned direct qualification into the round of 16, which will not be played until March. The remaining 16 will be taking on an extra playoff round in February. The draw for the second round will take place on Friday 31 January at 12:00 CET in Nyon, Switzerland.

To give a brief outline of the draw, the teams placed 9th to 16th will be drawn and will play the second leg at home. They will face a team placed between 17th and 24th. Another new feature is that the playoff teams will be drawn in pairs. In other words, the 9th or 10th team will play the 23rd or 24th, and so on. Contrary to previous editions, there are no restrictions for matches between teams from the same country or that have already played each other in the league phase.

Young Boys, Slovan Bratislava, Salzburg, Sturm Graz, Red Star Belgrade, Girona, RB Leipzig, Sparta Prague, Bologna, Dinamo Zagreb, Stuttgart and Shakhtar Donetsk were the 12 teams eliminated in the league stage.
