Sporting Lisbon announced on Tuesday that Aurelio Pereira has passed away, aged 77. The legendary scout was known for discovering superstars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Paulo Futre, who have all paid tribute to their mentor.

Aurelio Pereira, the legendary football scout credited for discovering superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Paulo Futre, has passed away aged 77.

"He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest names in the history of national football and, above all, in the history of Sporting Clube de Portugal,"  reads a statement from Sporting Lisbon.

"Sporting CP extends its deepest condolences to family and friends, whilst praising and thanking the years of effort, dedication, devotion and glory that Leao has brought to his chest."

Born in Lisbon in 1947, Pereira began his career as a professional footballer with Sporting before also spending some time with Benfica. He returned to his boyhood side, where he trained the club's youth ranks for 20 years.

Following the news, Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to the late scout via his social media platforms on social media, as he wrote. "One of the greatest symbols of world training has left us, but his legacy will live on forever.

"I will never stop being grateful for everything he did for me and so many other players. Until forever, Mr. Aurelio, thank you for everything. Rest in peace."
