Roma coach Luciano Spalletti thanks Francesco Totti for urging the fans not to be split by the debate over his future
The 39-year-old is out of contract this summer with the club he has spent his whole career at, and his future is up in the air still, with Roma failing to offer him a new contract.
After only featuring 11 times this season, and with his contract expiring in a matter of months, the Italian has been linked with a move away to Leicester and New York Cosmos.
Totti's future has been a point of much debate amongst the fans, with many believing the club are disrespecting the club legend by not offering him a new deal.
Totti took to social media to express his views, and showed how he really is a true footballing icon.
His statement read: "The great beauty of Rome and Roma - like the fairytale we experienced at the stadium on Wednesday night - can only be truly appreciated by those who love these colours, as I do and as you do.
"My goals helped the team and the club I've always loved to win the game. That should unite people, not divide.
"We have a big match coming up on Monday and the only thing that matters to me - as always - is being able to celebrate with my team-mates, the coach, the club and our very special fans."
Spallettim who took over in January and has been subject to much criticism for his treatment of Totti, has praised and thanked the star for his message.
"I've had a non-existent rivalry with Totti thrust upon me. I'm pleased if he's doing what he loves, " he said.
"I really enjoyed Totti's message on his website. A true captain's statement.
"I need everyone in my squad, Totti included obviously. I have to make sure all the lads feel important. He is always an asset to us."
