After scoring their goals against Serbia, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka both celebrated by making a nationalist symbol that points to their Albanian roots in Switzerland's 2-1 on Friday at the World Cup.

Shaqiri, who scored the winner in the last minute, was born in Kosovo. A former Serbian province that declared independece in 2008, it is an area still fraught with tensions and has only limited international recognition - Serbia does not recognise its independence.

In addition to his gestures, Shaqiri also has the Kosovan flag etched into his boots

"I think about this, I don't want to speak," Shaqiri said when quizzed on his celebration after the game.

"In football, you have always emotions.

"You can see what I did, and it's just emotion, and I'm just happy to have scored the goal. I did it, and we don't have to speak about this."

"You should never mix politics and football," Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic said, weighing in on the matter.

"You should always show respect.
