Leroy Sane is hotly tipped to be the Premier League's Young Player of the Year but the 21-year-old can't seem to convert his form into the Champions League.

The German winger has scored 13 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions this season for Manchester City but is yet to find the back of the net in Europe.

Pep Guardiola has included Sane in all eight Champions League matches and in every encounter he has come up short, his only contribution being two assists so far - some way short of the 13 he has provided in the other competitions.

Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final clash provided the perfect opportunity to break that drought as City faced fellow league rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

However, opposing defender Trent Alexander-Arnold learnt from his mistakes in the loss to Manchester United and kept Sane quiet all game as the 'Sky Blues' slumped to a 3-0 defeat to leave their European dream hanging by a thread.

In fact, the young German failed to register a single shot on target, along with his City teammates, much to the surprise of pundits and fans who had tipped Guardiola's side to lift the trophy in Kiev.

Sane has shown that he has tremendous talent but if he is going to make it on the big stage, he needs to prove his skeptics that he can deliver in football's most prestigious club competition.

He has one more chance: when City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad in the return leg next Tuesday.
