Wayne Rooney has revealed that a big motivation for him making a switch to DC United in the MLS was their new stadium.

The former England captain cut short his return to boyhood club Everton to sign for the American side on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

After leaving the Premier League as its second highest scorer ever after Alan Shearer, Rooney has a lot to live up to for his new side, especially considering they are sat bottom of the Eastern Conference.

The striker was attending a ceremony to unveil the new 20,000 capacity stadium, telling the gathered crowd why he had decided to choose DC United:

"to all the owners of the football club for creating this beautiful stadium. When I spoke to them about coming here to play I could tell the excitement they had with the stadium.

"I've seen the new training ground as well which will be completed next year. It played a big part in me coming here.

After a career at Man Utd that was littered with trophies, including 5 Premier League titles and a Champions League win, Rooney is looking for more title wins with his new club.

"I've come here to win, to help this team move forward and win titles, that's my job here. Hopefully in the next few years we can bring titles and trophies to this wonderful new stadium." he explained.
