Former Premier League referee Graham Poll says that Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo should have been banned for 12 games after pushing referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea during Real Madrid's 3-1 win over Barcelona on Sunday.

The offence is punishable by a ban of up to 12 games and Poll feels that the Portuguese's punishment was not harsh enough to deter other players from acts of aggression against match officials in the future.

Writing for 'The Daily Mail', the 47-year-old said: "Footballers from the Premier League down to kids' teams must be shown that touching, pushing or striking a match official is totally unacceptable and a five-match ban just does not do that."

Poll then pointed out that Las Palmas striker Marko Livaja only received a four-match ban for a similar offence - the minimum sanction for an act of aggression towards an official - and that the fact Ronaldo then pushed de Burgos Bengoetxea shows that Livaja's ban was not sufficient as it did not act as a deterrent..

Those bans pale in comparison to those doled out in England. Southampton midfielder David Prutton was given a ten-match ban for his infamous push on referee Alan Wiley, whilst West Ham's Paulo Di Canio's push on Paul Alcock was punished with an eleven-game ban.

Poll ended by concluding that impressionable children all over the world tune in to football and they need to be shown that offences such as Ronaldo's are not acceptable.

Do you agree with the former man in black? Should Ronaldo have been given a longer ban?
