Ronaldo moves to within a goal of Pele

Cristiano Ronaldo never gets sick of setting new records and on Saturday, he'll have another opportunity to do just that. The Portuguese's strike against Al-Jazira in the Club World Cup semi-final on Wednesday means that he is now just a goal away from equalling 'O Rei' as the top scorer across both the now-defunct Intercontinental Cup and its successor, the Club World Cup.

Pele retired with seven goals to his name in the Intercontinental Cup, managing that total in just two installments of the tournament. Should Ronaldo manage to get his tally up to the same level against Gremio on Saturday's final, he will have taken eight games to do so.

Brazil legend Pele played three games in the competition in 1962 and 1963. In those days, the Intercontinental Cup was a two-legged affair (that was changed in 1968). The striker played both home and away against Benfica in 1962, scoring five goals and in the first leg against AC Milan in 1963, scoring a further two.

For his part, Ronaldo scored once for Manchester United against Gamba Osaka in 2008, once for Real against América in 2016, three more in the final against Kashima Antlers the same year and one against Al-Jazira on Wednesday.

It seems appropriate that it is a tie against a Brazilian side that gives the Portugal star the chance to leapfrog one of the game's greats.

Join us on Saturday to find out if Ronaldo manages to equal or even beat the record of 'O Rei'.
