Just seconds before the first 45 minutes were up, the Portuguese forward came to the rescue of his team-mates and scored a penalty, despite Alphonse Areola guessing the right way and helping to alleviate any half-time worry at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese came into the knockout stages with 114 goals in the Champions League. However, if you take away the goals he scored for Manchester United he stood on only 99 for Real Madrid. With his strike on Wednesday night he became the first player to score 100 goals with the same club in the Champions League.
