Portugal became the latest national side to name their 23-man squad for the World Cup on Thursday, but there was no room in the squad for either Ruben Neves or Nelson Semedo.

Neves was Wolverhampton Wanderers' standout player as they secured promotion to the Premier League, but he was not deemed worthy of a place in the 23.

Neither was Barcelona's Nelson Semedo, with Cédric Soares and Ricardo Pereira preferred as options at right-back, with Semedo seemingly paying the price for losing his place in the Barca team to Sergi Roberto.

Furthermore, Euro 2016 hero Eder will not be present in Russia, having seen the likes of Gonçalo Guedes, Gelson Martins and Andre Silva climb above him in the pecking order in recent years.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Anthony Lopes (Lyon), Beto (Goztepe) and Rui Patrício (Sporting)

Defenders:, Cédric Soares (Southampton), José Fonte (Dalian Yifang), Ricardo Pereira (FC Porto), Pepe (Besiktas), Raphael Guerreiro (Dortmund), Bruno Alves (Rangers), Rúben Dias (Benfica) and Mario Rui (Napoli).

Midfielders: Adrien Silva (Leicester), Manuel Fernandes (Lokomotiv Moscow), Bruno Fernandes (Sporting), João Mário (West Ham), João Moutinho (Monaco) and William Carvalho (Sporting).

Forwards: André Silva (Milan), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Gelson Martins (Sporting), Gonçalo Guedes (Valência) and Ricardo Quaresma (Besiktas).
