National Police in Asturias confirm the arrest of an Real Oviedo supporter for alleged racist gestures, seemingly directed at Kylian Mbappe, during the match against Real Madrid.

National Police have arrested a Real Oviedo fan for alleged racist behaviour during the match between the Asturian club and Real Madrid on August 24th. The incident occurred in the home end of the Carlos Tartiere stadium, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Superior Headquarters of Asturias Police.

The supporter, arrested for alleged offences against moral integrity and incitement to hatred, was identified through analysis of images and videos. He is accused of making monkey gestures and noises in the 37th minute, coinciding with the celebration of the first goal by the visiting team, scored by Kylian Mbappe.

The allegations were reported after the match by the Professional Football League (LFP), who highlighted the wider reach of the images through television broadcasts and social media.

After providing a statement to the police, the individual was brought before the Investigating Court number 1 on duty in Oviedo.

Furthermore, he has been recommended for administrative sanctions for violating the Law against violence, racism, xenophobia, and intolerance in sport, which carries potential fines ranging from €60,000 to €650,000 for very serious offences, as well as a ban from attending matches.

The Delegate Prosecutor for Penal Guardianship for Equality and Against Discrimination has also been notified of the investigation. This body deals with hate crimes which, according to the Penal Code, could carry a prison sentence of up to three years, the Superior Headquarters of Asturias Police added.
