Manchester United have announced the long awaited arrival of goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan. The deal breaks down as €51 million paid up front, with another €4 million in add-ons. The Cameroonian is the successor to David De Gea, who departed Old Trafford after 12 seasons on free transfer after failing to negotiate an extension with the club.
The 27-year-old arrival reunites with United manager, Erik ten Hag, with whom he previously worked at Ajax. Together the two won three Eredivisie titles and Onana then joined Inter last summer on free transfer when his deal in the Netherlands expired.
Although he made just 24 Serie A appearances, he played all 13 of the Champions League fixtures, keeping eight clean sheets as the 'Nerazzurri' reached the final for the first time in 13 years.
He wrote a farewell message to fans on Thursday night, thanking them for their support: "I never imagined that a farewell would be so hard. A year ago I became a Nerazzurro, many people told me that this club and this city had something special", he began.
"Now I can confirm it. In my first days as a Nerazzurro I realised that this is a family, that being Interisti is a way of understanding life. I fell in love with San Siro, la Curva and the city. Now the circumstances are right for me to start a new journey in Manchester. I do it with great enthusiasm, but knowing that I will miss you. Eternal gratitude to all the interisti. You make this club great", he continued.
"Maybe one day our paths will cross again, but now it’s time to face new challenges and cheer you on from afar. Players come and go, but the club always remains, and Inter is above everything and everyone", finished his post.
