Schalke 04 sporting director Christian Heidel has confirmed that Max Meyer will leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season, opening the door for many of Europe's top clubs who have been patiently waiting in the wings.

He is considered one of Germany's most talented prospects and now Meyer will be a free agent in the summer after his current club Schalke confirm that the attacking midfielder has turned down the chance to sign a contract extension with the club.

Heidel broke the news on Schalke's twitter account, revealing: "Max Meyer will definitely leave Schalke this summer. We're dealing with the situation very professionally. It's all been very amicable".

The 22-year-old has been at the Bundesliga outfit since breaking into their first-team in 2013, making 146 appearances and scoring 17 goals in the process.

The news that he will be available on a free transfer this summer will no doubt kick up interest from numerous top clubs across Europe

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keen on signing Meyer while Arsenal and Liverpool lead the charge from England. Either way, it's going to be a race to sign the youngster when his contract expires on June 30
