A late strike by Massimo Maccarone secured a precious 1-0 win over Sassuolo as Empoli moved six places up to to 13th in Serie A on Sunday.

In Sunday's early game, Sassuolo, fifth overnight only three points behind leaders Fiorentina, looked to have secured a share of the spoils at the Carlo Castellani stadium.

However Maccarone's strike two minutes from the final whistle secured the points to get Marco Giampaolo's men back to winning ways after defeats to Frosinone and Atalanta.

The match took a dramatic turn in the final minutes when Empoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski saw red for a second bookable offence, but the hosts held on for just their second win of the season.

Fiorentina are top, ahead of Inter Milan on goal difference before hosting Atalanta on Sunday, when Inter are away to Sampdoria.

Champions Juventus host Bologna, looking for just their second win of the campaign in a bid to close their 10-point deficit, while AC Milan host Napoli in Sunday's late game.
