The rewards of winning

The four group winners of League A qualify for the UEFA Nations League Finals in June 2019. The group winners in Leagues B, C and D are promoted and those who finish bottom of the groups in Leagues A, B and C will be relegated.

How the groups work

There are 55 teams competing in the tournament and they have been split into four leagues from A down to D according to their position in the UEFA rankings. They have been split into three (for Leagues A and B) or four (Leagues C and D) pots, again according to the rankings. So, for example, League A is as follows:

Pot 1: Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain

Pot 2: France, England, Switzerland, Italy

Pot 3: Poland, Iceland, Croatia, Netherlands

Four three-team groups will be formed from those pots and teams play each other home and away.
