Real Madrid went to Kiev in need of a victory and with the memory of last season in their minds. Carlo Ancelotti's men hit the front in the 37th minute thanks to an own goal by Kryvtsov.

Real Madrid travelled to Shakhtar on matchday three in the Champions League group stage. Ancelotti men had to win after the defeat to Sheriff at the Santiago Bernabeu. In addition, the Ukrainians won both games last season.

The match started well for the Spanish side and they had chances through Benzema and Kroos. However, a Shakhtar attack set alarm bells ringing in the Madrid defence. Then, the 13 time Champions League winners opened the scoring in the 37th minute in fortuitous fashion.

Lucas Vazquez, who was playing at right back, went forward with the ball at his feet, he saw Benzema's run and put in a measured cross to the Frenchman. However, the home defender Kryvtsov got there first and deflected the ball into his own goal with his right foot.

The Real Madrid players celebrated the goal and could breathe easy as they were in front. Madrid had reached the opposing area, but had been unable to beat Trubin until then.

In the second half, Real Madrid ran riot. Vinicius scored twice in the 51st and 56th minutes and then Vinicius assisted for Rodrygo just after the hour mark.
