Vincent Kompany has heaped praise on Manchester City new boy Bernardo Silva and believes he can make a big impact at the Etihad this season.

Silva only started training with his new teammates last week but the Manchester City captain can already see the winger achieveing great things at the club.

Kompany told City's official website, “you can see what his qualities are. He’s got a silky touch, he’s a player who knows how to make key passes and I’m obviously very excited because I know how these kind of players can decide games and help you towards achieving great things.'

“But it’s still pre-season for him. He’s a little bit behind on fitness probably, which is normal and we’ll need him at the right time.”

Silva made his eagerly anticipated debut off the bench in a 3-0 win over West Ham on Friday. After the game, the Portugal international admitted he is not yet fit, but is working hard in training.

He told 'City TV', 'the team was fantastic. It was very good to play my first game with this shirt and I hope in the future we can all achieve a lot of things.'

'I'm still not 100 per cent because I have just started this week but I will train hard. I will work hard to be as well as I can and to help the team achieve our goals.'

Pep Guardiola's men get their Premier League campaign underway at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
