Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing criticism of Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, who has joined Aston Villa for the remainder of the season.
The England international was heavily linked with a move away from the Red Devils for much of the summer transfer window, eventually opting to join the Villains on loan for the rest of the campaign, after falling out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag.
Sancho spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund before signing for Chelsea last summer, with the club deciding to pay a five million pound penalty to cancel the option to buy him permanently.
Despite Sancho's attempts to revive his career at Aston Villa, Carragher has once again cast doubt on the player's quality and stands by his decision not to have included him in an England squad for several years.
"It's a funny one with Jadon Sancho. When he was at Borussia Dortmund, Gary Neville and I were on a programme where we had to pick an England squad," the former Liverpool man began on 'Sky Sports'.
"We hadn’t seen too much of him – he was doing well in the Champions League, but we left him out. Everyone on social media was saying, ‘How can you not pick Sancho?’ he continued.
"I’m still not sure there’s that much ability there. He’s okay, but I don’t really see what his standout quality is," he stated bluntly.
"With Marcus Rashford, even though I’ve criticised him, I can picture his pace, his shooting, his free kicks, the power he puts into the ball. With Sancho, I just don’t know what his thing is – I can’t picture it in my head," he added.
Sancho scored 12 goals in 83 appearances for the Red Devils since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a £73 million transfer in 2021. He could make his debut for Aston Villa when they face Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, as he looks to settle in and meet the fans' expectations.
