Huijsen: 'My first memory of Spain is the World Cup they won'

Huijsen, who plays as a centre-back for Bournemouth, dreams of one day returning to Malaga, a club with which he has a deep connection, although his future now lies with the Spanish national team.

The young defender, whose career has taken him through various top clubs, including Juventus, Roma, and now England, stands out for his development at clubs that have honed his defensive style.

In an interview, he shared how coaches like Mourinho and De Rossi have influenced his progress, but he particularly praises Andoni Iraola, who has been instrumental in his rise at Bournemouth.

When asked about his decision to play for Spain, Huijsen explained: "I always say that Spain is my home, my life is here, and my friends are Spanish." Though he initially played for the Netherlands' youth teams due to not having a Spanish passport, once the opportunity arose, he chose Spain—more out of sentiment than any sporting achievements.

His idol is Sergio Ramos, who has been pivotal in shaping his development as a centre-back, and his first memory of Spain’s national team is the 2010 World Cup win, when he was just five years old.

Huijsen also admits that his desire to learn and improve led him to Juventus, where he aimed to refine his defensive skills, something he values more in Italy than in Spain. However, his return to the top tier of football has come through the competitiveness and high intensity of the Premier League.

With his debut for Spain on the horizon, Huijsen is excited: "It's an honour to be with the best players in Spain," although he also recognises the strength of the Netherlands, whom he may face in his potential debut.

Despite his roots, he has made it clear that his heart belongs to Spain, and he is ready to contribute to their cause in his new journey with the national team.
