How did Jadon Sancho's exceptional form earn a first England call-up - without starting a league game for Borussia Dortmund?

Sancho is an 18-year-old winger, formerly of Watford's academy, who has shone in the Bundesliga so far this year.

In just 125 minutes of league football, he has provided five assists - more tha any other player in Europe's top five leagues, at an average of an assist every 25 minutes.

After asking what starlets like Sancho and Phil Foden had done to merit inclusion in his squad, Gareth Southgate has clearly seen the potential in Sancho at least.

"He is a very fast and creative player on the wing, just like Leroy Sane, Marco Reus or Christian Pulisic," said Sacha Bacinski, a sports reporter with 'Sky Sports'.

"He has good control and a strong eye for his better-positioned colleagues with a pass.

"For a player of his age, he fits into the team well.

"Young players with the amount of skill he has are very welcome in Dortmund, but they have a lot of weapons in attack so there is a lot of competition."

Sancho has previously featured for the England youth set-up, as part of the side that won the U17 World Cup.
