With their wealth of attacking options Liverpool rarely have problems scoring goals, but they were given a huge helping hand when they faced Southampton on Saturday as 'Saints' defender Wesley Hoedt put through his own net with less than 10 minutes gone.

Along with the terrible trio of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino, Xherdan Shaqiri was also handed a start at Anfield as the 'Reds' looked to maintain their strong start to the season.

Keen to make an impact, it was the Swiss who helped create the opener, even if it were a Southampton man who got the finall touch.

The powerful winger was slipped in down the left by Mane before chopping inside his man and crossing right-footed.

The cross was partly blocked by Shane Long but with it bouncing awkardly, Hoedt couldn't do anything but direct it beyond Alex McCarthy and into the back of the net at the far post.

It made Hoedt the first Southampton player to score a Premier League own goal since Jos Hooiveld back in December 2013.
