Martin Dubravka has become the first goalkeeper in the major leagues to concede a corner by taking longer than eight seconds to clear the ball, one of the IFAB's new regulations.
The IFAB's new rules have already begun to be implemented in the major leagues. One of them, in fact, has already occurred in the Premier League, with Martin Dubravka having the dubious honour of being the first goalkeeper to fall foul of the eight-second rule.
This rule dictates that if a goalkeeper takes longer than eight seconds to clear the ball, with the referee signalling the time remaining, the official will award a corner kick to the opposing team. The objective is none other than to put an end to time-wasting.
It was in the match between Tottenham and Burnley, with the 'Clarets' returning to the Premier League, that the rule was first seen to be enforced in the Premier League.
Barely three minutes into the match, Martin Dubravka took too long to clear from his own goalmouth. Michael Oliver did not hesitate and signalled a corner for Tottenham.
