England and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has only two years left on his current contract and is demanding a pay rise

According to a report in the 'Guardian' Manchester City and Raheem Sterling have reached a deadlock in contract negotiations, with the England winger demanding a £50,000 a week pay rise in order to put pen to paper on a new deal.

The 23 year old signed a five year deal in 2015 when he arrived at the club from Liverpool and although he is understood to have an option for a further year, Manchester City do not want to invoke this clause as it would see the player's transfer value dramatically fall.

This puts Sterling in a strong negotiating position, without mentioning the fact that the young attacker scored 23 times in all competitions last season. Although both parties are prepared to be patient and no exit is imminent, the situation could still develop.

Sterling has not been afraid to make bold moves in the past, he faced heavy criticism three years ago when he swapped Anfield for the Etihad Stadium. Sterling is holding out for a pay increase that would see him earn £220,000 a week, putting him up there with the club's top earners.

Sterling's manager Pep Guardiola commented on the situation on Friday, saying: “It’s well-known we’re delighted with him and would like him to continue. My club knows my opinion and we share that. After that it is the club and the agent.”

While it may not be a pressing need, City fans will be keeping a nervous eye on the situation.
