With the signing of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte looking like it will be finalised soon, we take a look at the City defence who will be the most expensive in history once the Frenchman arrives at the Etihad...

Bilbao announced on Monday that Laporte's release clause had been paid, terminating the 23-year-old's contract with the Basque club. It appears that his move to Manchester will be finalised soon, where the centre-back will join Pep Guardiola's already expensive defence.

The former Barcelona manager has always said that "defence is the best attack" and having spent €258m on his, it's no wonder the Premier League leaders have only lost once this season.

John Stones (€55.6m)

The England centre-back became the most expensive defender in history at the time when City signed him from Everton in 2016. Guardiola wanted Stones under any circumstance because of his ability to get the ball and play from the back.

Danilo (€30m)

The Brazilian right-back was next to move, leaving Real Madrid in the summer in one of their defensive signings. The 26-year-old is the cheapest out of Guardiola's purchases.

Kyle Walker (€51m)

Stone's England team-mate Walker left Tottenham to join the defensive project at City. His pace down the wing would make him an integral attacking asset too.

Benjamin Mendy (€57m)

The French centre-back was the last of the summer additions, joining from Monaco. The 23-year-old will learn a lot from skipper Vincent Kompany in the back-line.

Aymeric Laporte (€65m)

Once his signing to City is confirmed, Laporte will be the most expensive in Guardiola's defence. In addition, he will be the second most expensive defender in history behind Liverpool's €84 move for Virgil van Dijk.
