Manchester City stormed to a 4-1 victory over Tottenham on Saturday to extend their winning run in the Premier League to 16 games and move 14 points clear at the top of the table.

City went into the game looking to extend their record-breaking run and they were on top for almost the whole of the first half.

The hosts started the game well and took the lead with just 14 minutes on the clock, though they were given more than a bit of a helping hand in order to do so.

Leroy Sane sent in a corner from the left and Ilkay Gundogan was left completely unmarked to nod into the bottom corner from eight yards. It was too easy for City, who were creating opportunities on their own without Spurs handing them chances on a plate.

Sergio Aguero, in search of his 100th Manchester City goal at the Etihad stadium, saw an effort well saved by Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal, before Raheem Sterling fired the rebound over.

Gundogan then called Lloris into a save from the edge of the box, whilst only a poor touch from Sane prevented him from getting in.

Harry Kane had Spurs’ best chance as he placed an effort just wide of the far post from the edge of the box but the visitors were largely anonymous as an attacking force in the first 45.

City went into the break a goal to the good but Mauricio Pochettino's side were much improved after the break.

Kane should have put Son in just minutes after the restart but he overhit his pass and the chance was lost.

The England man was next to threaten as he unleashed a powerful drive from 25 yards that forced Ederson into a sharp save away to his right.

City grew back into the game at that point though after a spell of Spurs pressure, with De Bruyne almost putting Gabriel Jesus in just seconds after his introduction.

Despite being good value for their lead, City were struggling to add to it and make the game safe. Sterling inexplicably lifted the ball over the bar after Lloris made a fine reflex save to deny the impressive Sane, though their fears that it might be ‘one of those days’ were put to bed after 70 minutes.

Kane surrendered possession in the City half and the home side countered at pace. The ball was worked out to de Bruyne on the left and he rifled the ball across Lloris and into the far corner with his left foot.

Spurs were a beaten side from that point and almost completely imploded when Jan Vertonghen brought down De Bruyne in the box to give City the perfect chance to add to their lead.

Jesus was the man tasked with converting from the spot but his penalty cannoned back off the post, with Sterling blazing the rebound over.

The England winger made amends just four minutes later though as he put the game beyond Spurs. City raced away on the counter and Sane unselfishly squared for Sterling to tap home at the far post to make it three.

The scoring wasn't done there though as Sterling added another in the 90th minute. Eric Dier failed to deal with a routine long ball forward and the winger stole in to bundle past Lloris and walk the ball into the net.

The fourth official indicated a minimum of three minutes added on and that was enough for Spurs to get themselves a consolation.

City failed to clear and Christian Eriksen stole in to fire a low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Nevertheless it was a disappointing day at the office for Spurs. City, meanwhile continue to look imperious.
