Wayne Rooney has continued to lead the line for Everton despite their dip in form, added to the difficult situation the player is going through at a personal level.

The former England captain was banned from driving for two years and handed a 12-month community order after pleading guilty to drink driving at the Stockport Magistrates' Court.

Since the incident which took place on September 1, Rooney has continued to lead Everton with the Toffees slipping to a fourth straight defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Former teammate Gary Neville has backed the ex-United man, who has reportedly asked to play on Wednesday at Goodison Park, when they face Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

'You wouldn't want anyone else in this type of situation other than Wayne Rooney', Neville told Sky Sports.

'He's going through a difficult time at the moment but he started so well and from what I saw on Sunday I saw a player that still had the ability to play at the top level, the courage to take the ball and take responsibility and there's no better person', he added.

'He will be in that dressing room, passing on his experiences, he'll want to play every minute of every game, he won't want to be rested. As an Evertonian I think he'll be an unbelievable success there', Neville concluded.
