The 29-year-old spent last season out on loan in the Turkish league with Fenerbahce, scoring 4 goals in 25 league games.
The Dutchman is free to leave the North East this summer but only if interest parties meet Sunderland's valuation, something which they have so far failed to do.
Lens joined the 'Black Cats' in 2015 from Dynamo Kyiv for a fee of £11m but has largely disappointed during his spell in England.
The former PSV man has made just 25 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland and looks unlikely to add to that total as new boss Simon Grayson looks to clear the decks in order to fund a rebuild of his squad.
