The Brazil international has spoken out about the situation at his former club Shaktar Donetsk and the misconceptions he's had to face throughout his career.
The 26-year-old, tipped for stardom from a young age, left Brazil to go to Ukraine in 2013, with Donetsk proving a popular destination for up and coming Brazilians at that point in time.
As a club Shaktar have nurtured the likes of Douglas Costa, Fernandinho and Fred and acted as a stepping stone from the South American leagues to Europe's biggest clubs and few doubted the merits of the move at the time.
However as the political situation in the country worsened, things followed suit off the pitch for Bernard. Speaking to 'MailOnline' Everton's summer acquisition opened up on what it was like:
''It was hard for me because I was still very young,'' said Bernard.
''The war broke out in my first year and then, while I was in Brazil just after the World Cup, a plane was shot down in Donetsk where I had been living with my parents.
''The club had to move city, we lost our infrastructure including the training base and we had to fly to every game from the capital. It was a hard situation, very tense. But a big learning experience.
''There was no doubt it was scary. There were blockades to enter and exit the cities. Cars were searched for bombs and weapons. Many players lost their houses and flats [in Donetsk].
''A lot of people wanted to flee the city. Many did not have the money to leave. A lot of people died.''
However overcoming difficult situations has been nothing new for the attacker, who has had to put up with engrained perceptions of his diminutive 5 ft 4 frame throughout his whole career.
''I've always faced prejudice for my height and physique but it's not something that has ever worried me,'' said the little magician.
''I follow my dad's advice to overcome any physical issues. I use my other qualities to compensate. If you are quick with your feet and mind, small margins can make the difference.''
