Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte could be handed a Spanish cap soon, after the national side were reportedly interested in giving him a chance following Spain's swift exit from the World Cup.

Laporte could soon be putting on a Spain shirt, after he was snubbed by France in the lead up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

According to the 'Daily Mail' Spain are keen to give the Manchester City defender his international debut, after their disastrous campaign in Russia.

The Spanish FA sacked manager Julen Lopetegui the evening before the tournament began, and Spain went on to win just one of their four matches, and were knocked out by Russia on penalties.

Laporte represented France at youth level, up to U21s where he received 19 caps.

The 24-year-old is the world's second most expensive defender, joining Manchester City from Atletic Bilbao in January for £57million.

However, he has never made an international appearance.

French coach Didier Deschamps overlooked the defender for his World Cup squad, instead going with Benjamin Pavard, Adam Rami and Presnel Kimpembe.

Laporte is of Basque descent, and could therefore play for Spain, if he has not received a competitive cap for any other country.

Despite being called up to the France squad for the World Cup qualifiers, he never made an appearance, and so he could still play for Spain.
