The economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 stoppage will leave its mark on Atletico Madrid's coffers. 'AS' estimates that 'Los Colchoneros' will have to reduce next year's budget by between 100 and 200 million euros.

Atletico Madrid are trying to balance the books ahead of the 2020-21 season. The crisis caused by the coronavirus has had a big impact on Atletico's finances, just like it has had on the rest of the clubs.

The Madrid outfit's budget for 2019-20 is 500 million euros, an amount they will have to reduce for next season.

'AS' believes it will be 400 million euros for next term. It will still be one of the highest in Spain, but 20% less than the 2019-20 campaign.

However, that could worsen if Atletico Madrid do not play in the Champions League next season. For that to happen, the season must resume as Simeone's men are currently sixth in the table.

The newspaper says that if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, Atletico will have to cut their annual budget by another 100 million euros.

Atletico, just like the rest of the Spanish clubs, will lose matchday revenue due to the game being played behind closed doors. That is an important way of making money for some teams.

Atleti had to make 430 members of their staff temporarily redundant and the squad took a 70% pay cut.
