Enrique Cerezo, president of Atletico Madrid, caused quite a stir on Tuesday morning by referring to Manchester City striker Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero as stupid, but he backtracked later in the day.

Speaking to radio station COPE, Cerezo had said that “[Aguero] has been the only player who left Atletico under a cloud, as he was stupid,” in reference to the exit of the player from the Madrid club in 2011.

“He arrived as a hero, and he left through the back door,” the Atletico president said of the player who has lost his spot in City's starting XI following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

However in the afternoon the Atletico president, who is known in Spain for his colourful comments, decided to step back from his inflammatory characterisation of the Argentine superstar.

“The only thing I said was that his exit [from Atletico] was stupid, not that Aguero is stupid,” Cerezo is quoted by sports daily As as saying during a lunch between him and the Barcelona president prior to Tuesday’s Copa del Rey clash between the two teams.

“He is one of the best players in the world and I wish him the best of luck,” Cerezo added.
