As well as missing a penalty, Atalanta earned a 5-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park to secure their place in the next round of the Europa League.

It was the worst possible start for David Unsworth's men as the Italians took the lead thanks to Bryan Cristante's tap-in after 12 minutes.

Despite the setback, the Toffees did have a couple of chances to draw level in the opening period. Kevin Mirallas and Sandro Ramirez spurned good opportunities while Tom Davies had a shot superbly headed off the line by Rafael Toloi.

Things went from bad to worse for Everton after the break when Ashley Williams brought down Cristante in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Joel Robles, however, came to the rescue and saved Alejandro Gomez’s strike.

But Atalanta did double their lead just after the hour mark following more poor defending from the hosts. Gomez's corner towards the near post was easily flicked in by Cristante for his second of the night.

Everton did manage to pull one back with Sandro’s first goal for the club. Wayne Rooney fed Kevin Mirallas down the right and he cut back for the former Malaga man who finished low into the far corner.

A disastrous end to the game for Unsworth's side saw them leak three more goals. Robin Gosens and Andreas Cornelius both scored from open play before the latter headed in a stoppage time corner to finish the night off in style for the Italian club.
