Arsenal academy coach Per Mertesacker spoke about Ilkay Gundogan's future at Manchester City and said the Gunners are in "a good position" to sign him in an interview with 'ZDF'.

Ilkay Gundogan's future at Manchester City is uncertain. The skipper has just lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time in seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

Several reports link the German with Barcelona but there are more European clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Arsenal, interested in the Germany international.

Nonetheless, Mikel Arteta's side seem to be in pole position in the race for the 32-year-old. Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker said the Gunners are in "a good position" to sign him in an interview with 'ZDF'.

"I think the clubs are queuing. Because Arteta knows him and we probably haven't broken off contact, we're in a good position. I think he'll let it all sink in first and then choose from one of the four clubs," he claimed.
