According to local reports, Arsenal are considering shipping out Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi in the summer and replacing them with two of the Championship's brighter talents.

The 'London Evening Standard' reports that Xhaka and Mustafi could both be sold this summer as Arsenal look to repair their mistakes of transfer windows past.

The pair joined the club in 2016 in big-money moves, but have largely failed to live up to their billing as Arsenal fell out of the top four two season in a row.

Following the recent strengthening up front in the form of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal look set to spend big on a central midfielder and a centre-back when the window reopens, casting doubt on Xhaka and Mustafi's future.

The promising start for the German that saw him and Laurent Koscielny propel Arsenal to a 22-game unbeaten streak with both of tham started boded well, but he has gone backwards at an alarming rate since.

The World Cup winner has shown himself to be error-strewn, with his penchant for letting men run a cross him to the near post evident in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Xhaka has failed to provide the solid base in midfield that Arsenal have been craving since the departure of Patrick Vieira, with occasional blockbuster goals failing to paper over the cracks.

Reports claim that Arsenal would look to replace the duo with Norwich midfielder James Maddison and Fulham right-back Ryan Fredericks.

21-year-old Maddison has been one of the Championship's leading lights this season, scoring 15 goals and laying on 11 assists in 46 games in all competitions an lighting up the division with his creativity and quality on the ball.

However, the 'Canaries' are likely to hold out for top dollar for the former Coventry man.

Fredericks, on the other hand, would be much easier to get a hold of. The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted a number of suitors for his strong performances for the 'Cottagers'.

The former Tottenham man has started all but two of Fulham's Championship games this season, with the club currently 21 games unbeaten in the league.
